Raven's Blood - By Cassandra Lawson *Spotlight & Giveaway*

Add to Goodreads | Amazon |
Following the death of her wood nymph mother at the hands of vampires, Raven worked hard to build a life for herself in one of the few remaining human settlements. Her life takes a frightening turn when she finds herself an unwilling guest in a vampire settlement, but things are not anything like she expected them to be. Still, she cannot help but feel that her attraction to the vampire leader is a betrayal to her mother’s memory and her human friends.
From the moment Connor first laid eyes on Raven she has thrown his entire world off-balance. In order to prove his strength as a leader, he has no choice but to take her up on her offer to trade her freedom for that of her human friends. Having begun his life as a slave, he has no interest in keeping the wood nymph captive. As a man, he has no desire to feel this overwhelming attraction to a woman who hates him and his kind.
As Raven spends more time with the vampires, her feelings for Connor grow even stronger and Connor finds that she may be the one thing he cannot live without. Unfortunately, a new danger emerges that could threaten the survival of vampires and humans alike. As Connor struggles to unravel the mystery of the attacks from a new species of vampire, a madman will go to any lengths to get Raven’s blood.

Connor was shocked when Raven took off. She skipped the overgrown trail and headed straight into the trees. He followed her, awed by her graceful movements. If he’d been human, he never would have been able to keep up with her. With each step she seemed to gain strength.

Connor finally caught her arm. “Slow down some, little nymph.”

“Why?” she asked with a radiant smile. “Are you having trouble keeping up with me?”

Connor stepped in closer to her body and leaned in until she was trapped against a tree by his much larger body. Her gasp made him smile. She had obviously noticed his erection pressed against her belly. “Vampires get excited by the chase,” he said. “It weakens my self-control.”

Her eyes widened. “I thought you said you didn’t want an unwilling partner.”

“I don’t,” he said. “That’s why I would have to lay you down on the ground and lick every inch of your sweet body until you begged me to take you.”

Her pulse quickened and Connor couldn’t resist the temptation to lean forward and run his tongue across it. That made him even harder and he hadn’t thought that was possible.

Damn, but she seemed to be considering letting him do it. The green tint to her cheeks deepened. Never in a million years would he have guessed that green tinted flesh would be a turn-on. This hadn’t happened before so he assumed it had something to do with her proximity to nature. He suddenly wondered if other parts of her body flushed green when she was excited. Damn, he really would love to strip her naked and find out.

Finally, she let out a shaky breath. “Sorry, I’ll move slower.”

He released her and adjusted his jeans. “We need to stop for a minute so I can get things under control,” he said.

“I’m sorry,” she said nervously. “I wasn’t trying to do that to you.”

“You never are,” he said mostly to himself.

Devil's Salvation - By Gemma James *Review & Giveaway*

Devil's Kiss series - Book 4 | Add to Goodreads
It's been a year since Kayla Sutton walked away from Gage Channing, the man who blackmailed her into sexual slavery. Now he's back, and so is Ian Kaplan, Kayla's one-time lover from her college days. Both men want her, but only one holds the power to make her submit—to her own dark desires and to the truth she still denies, even to herself.
But Gage's jealousy is his worst enemy, and when he thinks Kayla has chosen Ian, he sets in motion a drastic plan to claim what's his. Only Kayla never expects him to infiltrate her heart so effortlessly; and she never dreamed there would come a day when he wouldn't want her—when the mere sight of her turns him away in disgust.
He believes she’s committed the ultimate sin, but will she use his mistake to finally escape the cage of his obsession? Or will she do whatever it takes to make him see he can entrust his heart to her...just as she's already lost the core of her being to him?

My breath grew shallow, from arousal, from fear. Gage was good at that—eliciting strong emotions that contrasted so sharply, they knocked a person on their ass in total confusion. I shouldn’t want him. I should scream at him to get the hell out of my house and never come back. I should get a freaking restraining order.

As if the turmoil inside me didn’t exist, I set our omelets on the table and calmly took a seat across from him. “What did you mean by boundaries?” I stabbed a bite and shoved it in my mouth. Raising my eyes to his turned out to be a mistake. His hypnotic stare paralyzed me; I couldn’t look away if my life depended on it. I fell into the ocean of his gaze and almost missed the satisfied quirk of his lips. Almost.

“You know by now that a relationship with me won’t be your standard variety. You’ll have rules that govern your behavior.”

“My behavior?”

“Yes. I expect you to obey me.” He set his fork down and winced. “But last year I was cruel to you and that’s not how I normally treat a woman. Not even when they beg me to hurt them beyond what I’m comfortable with.”

“Then why?” I choked out. Everything he’d done hit me square in the chest, and his admission that he’d been exceptionally cruel hurt more than it should.

“I wanted to destroy what was his.” He lowered his head with a frown. At least he had the grace to look ashamed.

“Congratulations.” I let my fork drop, satisfied with the clatter it made. “You succeeded.”

“No, I didn’t. Your strength is both my frustration and my undoing. There’s nothing more irritating or sexier on a woman.” He took a bite, and his gaze veered up to mine. “And to clarify on what I mean by boundaries, we’ll set limits this time. You’ll have a safe word.”

“You’re talking as if we’re going to be together.”

“I’m not leaving here without you, Kayla.”

For this fourth installment, I feel like James uses this book as an opportunity to make Gage less of an a**hole and create a better understanding of his nasty motivations. At this point Gage is still whipping back and forth between caring nice guy and overbearing d*ckwad. We were left with Gage re-entering Kayla's life but no real reason why. I actually hated him throughout the first three books because of how horrible he was acting towards Kayla. Unfortunately in this book despite getting some of his past, Gage is STILL being horrible towards Kayla and possibly even more so than before! He keeps pushing Kayla to trust him with herself yet I totally understand why she doesn't. He has done nothing to earn that trust and on top of that their relationship started with blackmail... not the most conducive of situations no?
Kayla is probably just as annoying because she knows that at this point in the story Gage hasn't changed and yet because she's addicted to their sexy time she continues to return to him - bringing her daughter in their twisted romance no less. Kayla comes across as a protective mother and yet continues to make a selfish decision to stay with Gage despite being unsure whether he daughter would be wholly safe - not okay Kayla! Their relationship made me cringe because while I admit their chemistry is smoking hot, they were not in a point in their lives where they should have pursued or strong armed each other into doing. Ian, the absolute darling, is right in recognizing abusive behaviour because I struggle to see the love in their Dom/sub relationship...
Despite all of this I did enjoy reading the books because James writes really well! The sexy time scenes are explosive but the characters and how the book feels slightly rushed to get to some kind of "conclusion" stops Devil's Salvation from more than three stars. Give it a shot and let me know what you think - maybe I've just had enough of the misunderstood arrogant billionaire? Argh maybe.

Is Fay to be sentenced to death as a spy, suffer a fate worse than death by being returned to her government as a traitor, or will she find a new life and love as the wife of three sexy brothers?

At her silence, he stripped off his shirt. A prickle of heat flushed down her neck as she watched his arm muscles flex with the movement. She had the strongest impulse to touch his smooth, tanned skin. She fought the urge to reach out, but curiosity plagued her. Would it feel warm and silky, unlike the pasty Dirt Dweller men who never made her core throb like this? She shook her head and looked away, resisting the desire. But she couldn’t stop her gaze from returning to him as he tossed the shirt down and hooked his thumbs over his large silver buckle. His actions dropped his pants a tempting two more inches below his hipbones, exposing the lower half of his hard stomach. Except for the hair on his head, the man’s body was hairless. Those pants were riding low enough to show some pubic hair by now, but there wasn’t any. She continued to stare at his thumbs, hoping his pants would fall another inch lower.
“Beautiful lady?” Arlo tilted his head down, capturing her attention when his long, semisweet-chocolate hair slipped over his muscled shoulder. Her breath caught in her chest. Something about his long hair added to his sexual attractiveness. The temptation to caress his physique and run her fingertips through his silky-looking hair was overwhelming. She had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep her hands tucked where they were.
“Ah, hmm.” The clearing of his throat drew her gaze up. He gave a cocky smile. “If you keep looking at me with that hungry look in those stunning violet eyes of yours…I’ll be honest, I don’t think I can stop myself from kissing you.”
In her world, modesty was expected. Though reluctant, she dropped her admiring scrutiny. Her pounding heart made her feel dizzy.
“Well.” Arlo’s tone was low as he slowly moved into her space while reaching out to pull her closer to him. The soft scent of sage filled her senses.
She didn’t resist his embrace as he whispered in her ear, “I’ll be damned if that reaction wasn’t more of an invitation than a rejection.”
Captivated by the sexy sound of his voice and the words he spoke, she didn’t argue with his observation. She wanted him to kiss her. No Dirt Dweller would ever confess to lusting for a woman as Arlo just did. Just the thought he desired her and let it be known made her heart beat faster. The idea of a man lusting for a woman was sinfully enticing. Guilt washed over her, but didn’t stay. She didn’t care how many prayers of forgiveness she would have to say for this moment of passion. It would be worth it.
Arlo leaned back a smidgeon and angled his head down until their gazes met. He briefly paused as if silently asking permission to kiss her. This time she refused to look away. He gave a sexy smirk and a wink before slipping his hand behind her neck in a seductive move bringing her mouth toward his succulent lips. His lips merged with her willing mouth in a heated kiss. Their bodies followed, pressing into each other. She couldn’t get close enough to him.
He broke the kiss and murmured next to her ear, “If I’m moving too fast for you, tell me.” He kissed her again not waiting for her answer. Fay couldn’t think of a reason to stop him, nor did she want to.
His mouth was soft and warm. His kiss lingered on her lips, and the warmth between her thighs moistened her panties. She glided her hands over him as she molded her body into his. Every inch of her flesh craved him. She was hungry to feel his body’s heat sizzle against hers. She imagined what he might look like naked. Lusty images swirled around in her mind as her heart filled with passion. Every cell in her body desired him.
Fay ravished every inch of his exposed skin with her fingers. She raked them up and down his back never having felt a man’s body like this. He was so hard and muscular. The sensation was driving her libido wild. In a moment of clarity she realized what she was doing. She’d been raised to know she was acting in a shameless and disgraceful manner. Teachings, not belief, made her pull away from him. She’d never done anything like this before. It had to be the fresh air. Maybe the levels of oxygen were higher here compared to her Underworld’s limited supply.
He slipped his fingers along the closure of her flight suit making her skin heat with wanton desire.
“Now, I’m getting distracted,” he said, pinching the pull tab of her zipper between his fingers and sliding it downward.
Her breasts bounced with each rousing breath she took.
“I’m here to see you get a bath, my little filly. Are you going to get undressed, or am I going to have to do it for you? And if I do it for you…it’ll most likely lead us to…things other than bathing.”
“I-I don’t want to bathe.” She could not believe she said that.
He smiled. “Neither do I…right now.”
“There’s something else on my mind.”
“Mine too.” His hand fell from her zipper as he leaned slightly away from her.
Her gaze followed his down to see he had an erection. She glanced up and met his apologetic stare. He raised his brow silently asking for her understanding.
“If I bring you back still smelling like my horse, Drakker will flip out. He likes his woman smelling sweet.”
His woman? Fay stiffened her back and narrowed her eyes with his insulting insinuation she belonged to Drakker.
Arlo’s brows rounded as he shifted his weight. “That didn’t come out right, did it? I’m sorry. I just meant he thinks you’ll be more comfortable washing off some of this rider’s dust. Trust me, it’s not like we’ve laid claim on you as ours, but I ain’t saying we wouldn’t like to.”
Something about his foot-in-the-mouth demeanor made her laugh. Arlo was a very sweet man. All day he’d questioned her about her comfort and kept trying to make the ride easier for her. He was very attentive and had entertained her with comments about their surroundings and life as an Airborne.
He joined her in her laughter. “Damn, those striking eyes can throw some nasty daggers when they want to, huh? Holy moly, I’ve never seen a woman get so fired up about being claimed. Most want to be. Guess those daggers mean you’re a very independent woman, huh?”
At her nod, he continued. “Well, ain’t nothing wrong with that. Nevertheless, I still got orders to get you bathed. If I don’t, Drakker will have my hide. Since you ain’t making any moves to get in the water, I’m going to help you.” He reached up and pulled the zipper down to her waist. His gaze dropped. Hers followed. Her peeking cleavage held his interest.
Arlo slid his hands over her shoulders and down her back, pushing the upper portion of her garment down over her hips. The coolness of the gentle breeze against her skin made her gasp. What an energizing feeling! Life here was so different. It was intoxicating. Even the silky feel of her own waist-length hair brushing against the flesh of her back was stimulating. The soft braid made little prickly bumps erupt all over her skin. All these new feelings were unique because Dirt Dwellers never bathed without bath clothes.
Allowing Arlo to remove her clothes was depraved by her church and government’s standards, but somehow she just didn’t feel the humiliation she should. It felt good to be bad. Everything in her world was too restricted and confining in her opinion. Life here seemed freer, without shame, guilt, judgment, or censorship. To live such a life was too foreign for her thoughts, but in her dreams, she had longed for a life like this.
Arlo traced his fingers across her skin, giving her goose bumps from the gentleness of his touch. A soft groan escaped him the minute he pinched at the back of her bra hook, snapping it open.
“Come here,” he whispered before placing tiny, wet kisses along her neck and throat until her breathing grew hard and rapid with a need she’d never felt before.
“Little lady, this body of yours has been speaking to me all day long. I’ve never wanted anything in my life as much as I want you, my lovely Star Rider. Will you have me?” He swept the bra away from her breasts.
“I—”
“Arlo!” Drakker’s voice sliced through the twilight.
He stiffened then backed away from her. “We’re over here, bro.” His sigh was heavy with what sounded like disappointment. “She’s just getting in the stream now.” With a raised brow, he silently indicated she should get bathing. “We’ll be up in ten.”
The cool breeze passing over her skin hardened her nipples. She covered herself with her hands, but the moment she looked down, she realized there was no point. She was already standing there half-naked for his perusal. Casting her ingrained modesty aside, she dropped the rest of the clothing from her lower half and rushed into the water. The crispness of the river stopped her ankle deep. She screeched, retreating.
Arlo rushed forward, stopping her withdrawal with a strong arm around her waist. “It’s mountain water. It’s going to be chilly.” He laughed, nudging her gently back into the water.
“I can’t bathe in this.” She scampered out of his hold while trying to dodge his grasp. He caught her again and jailed her in his arms. The playful act pressed her breasts against him, flesh to naked flesh, lips just a breath’s distance from one another. For one provocative moment, they silently stared into each other’s eyes, and then their shallow breaths merged into a passionate kiss.
There was no denying her desire for Arlo. The man not only felt right, but he smelled right. He was temptation at its best.

Blind Date with a Bear - By Marie Mason *Review & Giveaway*

Blackwood Brothers Series | Add to Goodreads
| Amazon | Amazon UK | BN | Smashwords | Kobo |
When Quinn Blackwood thought it was time to go hunting for his mate, he couldn’t believe fate handed her to him on his very first blind date. His family thought it was an hilarious turn of events since the big bear shifter had been looking forward to sowing a few more wild oats before settling down with his one true mate. No one was laughing when Paige got the wrong idea and believed Quinn was just looking for a good time.
Paige Matthews had finally given into the cajoling of her co-worker and agreed to a blind date with the woman’s brother. Paige admired the family of bear shifters and had nursed a secret crush on the oldest Blackwood brother, Quinn, since moving to town. Even though she’d known the odds were against it, she was terribly disappointed that she wasn’t his true mate. She did however, decide to take him up on his offer of a good time, cause this good-girl craved the bear’s sweet loving.

“You’re very big.”

Oh, baby, he thought, you don’t know the half of it. Her voice was soft and sultry, something you would hear over the phone if you called a sex line. His cock stood at attention. Again. If she kept looking at him like that, she’d soon have a pretty good idea of his size. Her tongue came out to lick her lips and he thought he just might shoot his load in his pants.

“I, um, Deb, didn’t say how tall you were.”

His eyes took on a heavy-lidded look. He needed to hide the effect her voice was having on him. His pupils had no doubt dilated and the golden color of his bear was shining through the natural brown color of his eyes. A bear clawing at the surface, ready to spring into action, ready to mount this woman.

Cherish her.

He felt an unfamiliar stirring inside that had absolutely nothing to do with sex. Did you fall in love with your mate the instant you met her?

“And she didn’t say how small you were.” He grabbed his bear by the throat and yank him back. He had a suspicion she wouldn’t appreciate being slung over his shoulder and carried out of the restaurant for a night of hard, rough loving.

Instead, he needed to get to know her, show her how civilized a bear shifter could be. Then take her home for a night of hard, rough loving. The bear liked that idea. A lot.

She snorted before a smile lit up her whole face and both man and bear basked in the warmth of her expression. Before, Quinn had considered her pretty, now he could honestly say she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

“I’m far from small.”

“Everyone is small compared to me.” He held out his hand to help her from the stool and her delicate hand was lost in his. His mother had once measured his hands with her dinner plates. His finger-span had easily covered the white china and everyone had laughed. Bear shifters were supposed to be big.

“Maybe that’s why Deb thought we would be good together.” Her voice held a hint of emotion he couldn’t decipher.

“Deb knows I appreciate a beautiful woman.” He raised her chin with a finger, making sure she was looking at him before he continued. “Look, I’m a big man. You’re a curvy woman. I think that makes for a perfect combination.”

“You sure don’t pull your punches, do you?”

“Why, because I called you a curvy woman?” If she said one thing about her size, he’d take her over his knee.

“No, because you claim you’re a big man.” Her gaze fell to the bulge in his pants, the bulge she’d put there. Heat blasted him and his heart did a somersault at the spirit behind another sweet smile.

“I always tell the truth, baby,” he grinned. Now that he had her talking, she was turning out to be a little sassy. He liked that. He realized he liked a lot of things about her. He was hard pressed to pick his favorite. The full, pouty pink lips he’d love to see wrapped about his cock or the dark green eyes he wanted burning with passion as he pounded deep inside her. The sultry voice he’d soon have screaming his name as he licked her slit, making her cream all over his tongue.

Okay. He wanted this woman. Any other time he’d be cursing the fact that his big sister had found his mate on the first try and he’d never see the end of her smugness. Now, he wondered what he needed to buy her as a thank-you gift. And how to convince Paige to come home with him tonight so he could show her just how big bear shifters could really get.

Just then, her stomach growled, making him frown. Provide. Protect. The two instinctual mandates all male shifters felt for their mates. He needed to feed her. “Let’s get you fed and then we’ll discuss the particulars.”

Like will I be fucking you at your place or mine?

This novel doesn't have the most intricate of storylines but what it lacks in plot it makes up for in steamy hot erotic romance. I'm an avid fan of shifter novels in general, which some of you may already know, but Marie Mason caters to shifter fans similarly to Anya Bast and fantasy erotica. They story is sweet, short and hella sexy. I loved it!

Quinn is a typical male shifter, brawny, protective, totally gorgeous and absolutely oblivious. Paige was a wonderful leading lady slightly insecure about her body. Okay, I have to mention that this is classified as a BBW romance. I've come to understand BBW means curvaceous women but still have no idea what it EXACTLY means... >< I often find it slightly redundant because unless an author specifically states "flat stomach" I usually envision the ladies in books as pretty average woman. (The guys are another story ;] )

Anyway... the romance story is pretty typical and again the plot isn't something hugely riveting but I truly enjoyed the dynamic between Quinn and Paige. Plus I adore shifter reads so this was a bunch of fun to read. The romance was cute and the characters were a barrel of laughs. I'm pretty excited to see the who the twins end up with!

Definitely recommend if you love shifters, like me, and want a light, funny, sexy, short time filler!

Marie Mason loves romance. Writing, reading –it just depends on the time of day which she loves to do most. Having had a mydrid of unsatisfying jobs, and the gnawing, aching need to be a writer, Marie jumped head first into the world romance, without a safety net nor the ability to swim. She still works as a semi-unsatisfying and is just waiting for the day when her husband turns to her and says “Honey, when are you going to quit your job and write full time.”

Book Trailer

Lendyn Hughes' grandmother has kept a secret from her for over thirty-one years, who Lendyn's parents are. A devastating break-up following her grandmother's death leaves Lendyn alone, confused and determined to find answers. Armed with only a
name Lendyn attempts to unfurl the branches of her family tree never guessing it would put her life in danger.

For over two hundred years Englishman Callum Scott lived a life surrounded by beauty. A life free from all those annoying human emotions. That is until the American showed up. Lendyn flipped his world upside down and put him in the worst sort of jeopardy. He's starting to feel things and a murderer can't afford to feel.

My hand fumbled through the darkness reaching for Devin. I needed to feel him, know he was there. Something troubled me, but I couldn’t put a finger on what.
A morsel of his flesh beneath my fingers would pacify me. Assure me he was still there. I reached further until my fingers collided with the soft, peach under-flesh of his forearm. I ran a hand across his solid form pausing for a moment to trace a figure eight on the mound of muscle encompassing his shoulder. He had a body fit to be relished even in the troubling hour’s lack of sleep brought.
He purred for a moment before stretching an arm and rolling over to his stomach stifling his rhythmic snoring. I tucked the sheets over him and kissed his golden hair. It was a perfect evening; work failed to interrupt our plans which were a rarity. We went for a moonlit walk along Paradise Cove, an exclusive beach, you had to be a member of to stroll along. This meant no paparazzi to hassle us.
They were one of many drawbacks to dating a celebrity, but as I admired the contours of his body, there were benefits too. Though maybe tonight had been too perfect. That was silly thinking. We didn’t spend enough time alone for anything to be too perfect.
An eerie flash of red in my peripheral caught my attention. I sat up noticing for the first time the clock on the nightstand was flashing 11:41 over and over. One of the problems to living in an old hotel like the Beltmore … things tended to fizzle out all the time. Last month it was the air conditioning, before that, the hot water. Maybe Devin was right, and it was time to move out of this hotel and into an apartment. I shrugged, I’d debate that tomorrow.
I patted the nightstand for my cell; it wasn’t there. Then I remembered I dropped it on the dresser earlier this evening when Devin had pinned me there to deliver one of his toe curling kisses. Trying to keep quiet while navigating the dark became impossible when I stubbed my toe on one of Devin’s Sketchers and tripped headfirst into the dresser. My hand flew to my mouth muffling a scream that rushed to my lips. Devin stirred but didn’t wake.
Phew. The last thing I needed was to wake him. He was a bit of a grump and once he was awake, he’d have to leave. Work always came first.
Along the dresser, I felt the smooth outline of my phone. When the screen lit up the time was only 2:08 a.m. still early and plenty of time to crawl back into bed and snuggle up next to Devin. Halfway back to bed and my phone started vibrating. There were fourteen missed calls and one voicemail, all of which, came from one number—Emma. Now, I was a bit worried. It’d been a while since the last time I’d spoken with my best friend Emma.
Emma had this philosophy about calling once and not calling again until you called her back, hence my worry.
I dialed my voicemail, “Wednesday, 12:15 a.m—Lend, its Em call me as soon as you—BEEP.” Em was calling on the other line. Why was I so nervous to answer it?
“Em what’s going on—” I swallowed, “—is everything okay?”
Emma didn’t even get my name out before she broke into sobs. Maybe she and “Mister Perfect” broke up again.
“Hello,” I said a little louder, “you still there?” All I could hear was sniffling, maybe she accidentally pocket dialed me. I debated hanging up and calling her back when a familiar English accent came on the line—Mister Perfect. “Lendyn it’s Zach … I’m afraid I have bad news … there was an accident involving Gigi,” he paused to take a breath as I held mine, “I’m afraid she didn’t make it.”
The room began to spin, and gravity pulled at me. Was I dreaming? This had to be a dream.
Zach’s voice continued, but I didn’t hear anything except a loud buzzing as my legs gave out, and I collapsed to the floor.

Lendyn Hughes had everything she wanted. A family that welcomed her with open arms and a man who loved her as-is. So what if they were all vampires, love picked you not the other way round. Besides she was half vampire herself.
One brief encounter. One wrong decision took it all away.
Now Lendyn is trying to remember what in the world she’s exactly doing in London, why she’s back with her ex, where she got the bruises covering her ribs from and who the taunting voice in her head is.
I’m sorry. Two words Callum never hated more. They were the two words he’d found on the Dear John note in Lendyn’s room. With one breath she declared her love and in the next breath she left him. Now his future looks bleak without Lendyn to color the way.

It was a beautiful day for a wedding. The English countryside provided a glorious canvas of green, while butterflies dancing along flowers provided an array of color, and bees buzzing provided the summer tune making it a day cut from a fairy tale. Surrounding magnolia bushes were in bloom, their fragrance carried along the breeze. From Callum’s bedroom window was an excellent view of the gazebo where Zach, his cousin, the brother his vampire life prevented him from having, was about to marry a loud obnoxious American named Emma. Emma wore on his nerves but she made Zach happy so he would learn to suffer her disagreeable ways.
Decorated in garlands of ice blue roses and white gardenia buds, the gazebo was as lovely as a painting.
Callum’s gaze, however, focused on the gardener pruning evergreens around the gazebo. Every squeeze of the shears flexed the gardener’s biceps. His skin dewed, veins bulging with the exertion wetted Callum’s appetite. Since Lendyn’s release from the hospital, he, along with the rest of his family, had been quenching their hunger from a supply of blood kept in a repository down in the wine cellars within the dungeons below Scott manor.
Sinking your teeth into a plastic IV bag did not bring the same thrill, or relief, sinking into the supple flesh of a neck, or thigh, did.
The gardener put his shears down and leaned against a marble column pressing a hand to his forehead shading his eyes as he looked up towards sky.
Up towards Callum.
Though with his human eyes there was no way the gardener could see this far. Callum watched the gardener’s jugular strain in a thick line along his neck.
Curse his vow not to spill a drop of human blood in honor of today’s wedding. The gardener started to rub at his neck and shoulder beckoning Callum to take a taste.
His blood called to him, sang of it’s sweetness. Callum couldn’t stop his fangs from poking through his bottom lip as he bit down hard. He slammed the window shut, locked it, and pulled the curtains closed. He took another second to get his breathing back to normal.
He tapped his fingers on the doorknob of his wardrobe, his gaze straying back to the window.
No.
He pulled open the doors and gagged at the sickening scent of cinnamon. Marco’s scent. Marco. His cousin and the man responsible for killing Emery, Callum's mother, he was also the man responsible for putting Lendyn in the hospital in the first place. Originally, Callum believed Marco attacked Lendyn out of spite. A means to punish Callum for all eternity, but that wasn’t the case. As ludicrous as it was, Marco was on a mission to destroy everything. Callum’s unhappiness was just an added benefit.
Marco’s wretched scent continued to hang around attached to the tailored suit he made for Callum. Callum yanked the suit from the depths of his closet and hung it on the door.
Yes, he claimed he’d disposed of it as he’d been ordered to do. Marco’s coup d’état severed all ties to their coven, their family, and in accordance with tradition everything he handled was burned. Callum had never seen Emma smile wider than when she watched every last evidence of Marco’s existence burn to ash, her wedding dress being the last item thrown onto the flaming pyre.
After that she’d become more flippant and rude to everyone, but especially him. Emma’s last injection had been that night and her vampire side was quick in taking over.
He rubbed the suit’s lapel between his fingers which he did every day, every time he examined the suit. He touched every button, rubbed every seam and squeezed every pocket. And, like every other time, he found nothing. Callum steepled his hands together and tapped his fingers on his chin.
Whether it was the way Marco glared at the jacket each time Callum came for a fitting, the cold stare down with Marco right before getting the suit, or the shiver that played down his spine when his fingers brushed Marco’s as he took the suit, he couldn’t say. Whatever instance it was though, made it a compulsion to keep the suit. Callum knew he couldn’t get rid of it because a vital clue hid within the stitching. He just hadn’t found that bloody clue yet.
He sneered at the suit before tucking it back into the depths of his wardrobe. He laid down on his bed rolling over to inhale the scent still lingering on his sheets—lilac.
It gave him chills.
He let go of the sheets and slid from the bed. Better to forget almost moments than try to repeat them. Lendyn consumed his thoughts, his fantasies. If not for continual interruptions from family, one of their almost moments was certain to turn dangerous. Every time her skin touched his he was willing to throw every rule away to never break contact. Worse was that these almost moments could end in blood being spilled; and not his.
He walked over to the wall separating his room from Lendyn’s and ran his hands along it. He couldn't say what he feared more, giving it all, or withdrawing completely. They’d danced along this knife blade so long he wasn’t sure he could do anything without being cut completely.
As much as he yearned for Lendyn, he feared her too. Logic leapt out a window whenever he was in her company. His emotions, which were lacking before, were a torrent now that buoyed to her, rising and falling with her changing moods.
It was disconcerting to be so attached to another. To worry as he did about Lendyn. He’d vowed to never let another person corrupt him, yet here he was utterly at her mercy. He hoped she was incapable of cruelty in sport or else his heart would be crushed.
