I've been on hiatus while I finished my Bachelor's Degree - spoiler alert: I got it! But what better way to come back to blogging than with my all time favourite literary couple Rose and Connor Cobalt. I'm so excited to have Krista and Becca Ritchie gracing my blog again with the added bonus of my idol Beyoncé! I hope you enjoy this post as much as I did, the songs are amazing but I'm biased...

BEYONCE SONGS THAT RESEMBLE THE ADDICTED CHARACTERS

It’s only appropriate that we compare the Addicted Characters to Beyonce songs during the Fuel the Fire tour, since Rose Calloway’s favorite singer is the one and only Beyonce. Let’s get it started:

ROSE CALLOWAY

Rose has worked extremely hard to get where she is in her career, and she is extremely proud of her success. But there always the outside voices (especially the media) criticizing her for not being maternal and her choices. This song talks about saying “screw you” to all the critics and haters and to embrace your successes and choices (whatever they may be) as a female. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s interlude is pro-feminism and inspiring. Rose approves.

CONNOR COBALT (COBALLOWAY)
Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)
Yes, this is the version that was on Fifty Shades of Grey. And it’s just a damn good song and even a better remix. It reminds us of Connor’s relationship with Rose. He doesn’t believe in love in Kiss the Sky, and often refers to it as a foolish endeavor. In Fuel the Fire, you’ll see him accepting love more and the complications that come with it. And yes, sometimes it makes him a little crazy and possibly even foolish. Plus, you know, this song is just pure sex ;)

LOREN HALE
Drunk in Love
Lyrics: I've been drinking, I've been drinking / I get filthy when that liquor get into me / I've been thinking, I've been thinking / Why can't I keep my fingers off it, baby?
This is really the epitome of Loren Hale. Not only with his addiction to alcohol but his co-depencey with Lily.

LILY CALLOWAY (LILO)
Superpower ft. Frank Ocean
This song talks about true love and how the unbreakable type of love is a superpower in itself. And yes, it took LiLo many years to realize this.

DAISY CALLOWAY
Pretty Hurts
Daisy spent much of her life as a model, constantly conforming to other people’s standards. She’d change her appearance to fit what the industry wanted or what her mom wanted. Never what she wanted. It took a toll on her, and left her with a bruised sense of identity. “Pretty Hurts” is the perfect song to resemble the youngest Calloway sister.

RYKE MEADOWS (RAISY)

Ryke was probably the hardest to choose a Beyonce song for, but in the end, we chose a song that we think captures his relationship with Daisy. They’re both often compared to darkness and lightness, which this song evokes. There’s also a sense of urgency to the song, wanting to enjoy life and love because you don’t know what tomorrow brings. Ryke and Daisy are the ones of the group who really live by the carpe diem motto. Who live for today and not for tomorrow.

Krista & Becca Ritchie are identical twins—one a science nerd, the other a comic book geek—but with their shared passion for writing, they combined their mental powers as kids and have never stopped telling stories. Now in their early twenties, they write about other twenty-somethings navigating through life, college, and romance. They love superheroes, flawed characters, and soul mate love.

The son of a heroin addict and the daughter of murdered parents. Sweet jesus, why do these characters have to have such horrible pasts?! Then upon meeting one another they come to lead lives heavily dependent on the other. It's unhealthy! Violet pushes every boundary and lives off adrenaline rushes which normally consists of risking her life. Luke is an alcoholic diabetic, nuff said. Both of them get into situations that could have resulted in their death but don't care - ah, kindred souls. Yes, I am employing a bit of sarcasm here because it is a horrible trait to have in common! Luke and Violet bond over their understanding denial, recognizing a person with secrets to hide in the other. I found this book generally uncomfortable. I disliked the relationship that was created on the "birds of a feather" and all that. I was constantly cringing at the graphic situations the characters had been forced to suffer. While I admire the writing of Sorenson as she developed the book beautifully I dislike books that rely heavily on disturbing graphic and tragic drama in order to build emotion. It makes books feel like a soap opera filled with over dramatic shocking events that create the interesting storylines but in the end are SO dramatic they come off as unbelieveable. I'm not saying an alcoholic son of a heroin addict and a murdered parents orphan adrenaline junkie with a death wish can't meet and have a perfectly believable love story I just find ALL of the problems overkill. The book has a cliffhanger ending but it appears to be typical for Sorenson to write novels as a two part series. Sorenson is a solid writer but I don't think I can handle much more of this kind of novel. I might pick up book two just to see how Sorenson rounds out her characters.

I have an issue with what I call the "virgin burden." The idea that being a virgin past your teens is unacceptable and a burden which must be dealt with by the first attractive male to give a woman attention lest she miss her opportunity. "Mad Love" is an example of the virgin burden because poor Sophie is a 23 year old virgin - *Gasps of terror* - but frankly it isn't that big a deal. Unfortunately it is also teamed with a possessive male who is practically drooling at being the one and only male whose blessed penis has touched her vagina... *smacks head* I just hate this combination because a) being a virgin past your teens doesn't make you a prude b) virgin doesn't mean pure, innocent and naive c) cavemen are extinct stop with the he-man routine. Aside from this and the ridiculous notion that a handsome billionaire becomes enamoured with a young girl he just met (curse 50 Shades of Grey for starting this trend) Abedi writes a lovely romance novel.

It's a typical fluffy read and is perfect romance fodder - being set in the Maldives was a nice change. The story is well written and the characters developed if not likeable. Sophie was a little too flaky and insecure allowing Clayton to push her around. She isn't what I prefer in my leading ladies but it's a satisfying read with a cliffhanger ending. If you like reading billionaire romances containing full functional and not traumatized at some point in their life alpha males then this is perfect for your next to read. The gay friends while slightly over the top were welcome comedic relief.

Now We Three of Human Geometry - By Miranda S Leslau *Review*

Amber, Danny and Dave, who grew up together during childhood, find themselves in a complicated love triangle as they reach adulthood. N.W.3 resembles the location where the story is set but also refers to the number three as in the ‘Now We Three’ of Human Geometry. This compelling read convinces the reader there is no right or wrong by exploring both light and dark aspects of human nature. The characters of N.W.3 Now We Three of Human Geometry are genuine and down to earth. The reader will laugh, cry, reminisce and think about all aspects of growing up, love, passion and temptation.

This tale of misspent youth, love and passion taps into the psychological change from experiencing childhood to having the responsibilities of a young adult. The twists and turns in the plot keep the reader engaged in this addictive love triangle. This book is set apart from other books in the thriller genre with its ability to encompass both sympathy and frustration at the same time. As the book reaches the penultimate climax Amber finds herself questioning her moral compass.

If I had known it was going to be a depressing book with mentally ill characters and manipulative plots of revenge I'd have never picked it up. I thought it would be a book about the intricacies of a three person relationship and how it would work but I was wrong. N.W.3 reads like a timeline of horrible events, I don't think there was a single happy moment throughout. The main kicker here is that it really does seem like a factual account. Most of my emotions came from the content, it's truly messed up stuff. Amber is sexually abused, depressed and has a horrible family life. Dave is egotistical, a substance abuser and vengefully manipulative. Danny is depressed, vindictive and also a substance abuser. Put them together and you have the Bermuda fucking triangle. There is no love between these unfortunate characters simply dependency and misguided emotions. There is no happily ever after which the author divulges in the third or forth chapter. The story is stuttered and flits between perspectives in such a ragged manner I often found myself confused about which character was speaking, especially considering both men have horribly similar names. Everyone ends up dead or alone and I ended up wishing I hadn't read it.

“Come.” Samyel gestured, indicating that they should follow him. “We must go.”

“Go? Go where?”

“Away. Inside. Or they will see.”

“Who will see what?”

The dark glasses revealed nothing as he stood impassively for a moment. “Everyone.”

Samyel was attracting a lot of attention. The crowd moving around them was giving him a wide berth, and he was the focus of a lot of strange looks, which just confirmed that he wasn’t dead—people could see him. Irene knew that it looked like a seven-foot tall man in a trench coat and dark glasses was talking to himself in the middle of the sidewalk. It wouldn’t be long before the cops came to investigate.

Irene gestured for Samyel to lead the way. “Fine. Let’s go.”

Irene heard another choke of protest and glanced at Jonah. There was a silent exchange of mouthed words, pantomimed gestures, and angry, exaggerated looks.

“Don’t be crazy,” Jonah hissed. “You can’t go with him!”

“You’re the one that always wants to stop and talk to every weirdo we meet,” she countered. “And what do you mean ‘you’? We’re both going.”

“Uh uh,” Jonah said. “This is your idea. If you get murdered, I’m not saving you.”

With an exasperated look, she motioned for Jonah to follow and set out after Samyel, who was nearly out of sight. Jonah reluctantly followed. Irene gave him a wry look as they trailed, side by side, a few feet behind Samyel. “You know, at some point, we’re going to have to talk about your propensity for picking fights with people bigger than yourself.”

“What’s propensity?”

“A really bad habit that you should stop.”

Jonah’s expression turned unreadable for a long moment, as if he was debating with himself, and then he looked away, stuffing his hands in his pockets and bowing his head to stare at the sidewalk as they went.

“I’ve changed the password, by the way, so you can’t do that again,” he said darkly.

She grabbed his arm, pulling him to a halt. “Jonah, listen to me. It’s not that I don’t appreciate you trying to protect me. I do. Even when it’s annoying and misplaced, like with Ernest. You’re the bravest, sweetest guy I’ve ever met, but I’m dead. You’re not. I’m already probably going to Hell for dragging you along on this adventure. Don’t add being the cause of your death to my list of crimes, okay?”

The tips of his ears had turned pink and his head was down, shoulders hunched. Then, to her surprise, he suddenly looked at her, his eyes inquiring as he searched her face. She didn’t know what he was looking for, but he was gazing at her so earnestly that she blushed.

Terri Bruce has been making up adventure stories for as long as she can remember and won her first writing award when she was twelve. Like Anne Shirley, she prefers to make people cry rather than laugh, but is happy if she can do either. She produces fantasy and adventure stories from a haunted house in New England where she lives with her husband and three cats.
